BERKOFSKY CONCERT BENEFITS ARLINGTON ALAN HOVHANESS MEMORIAL

A TRIBUTE TO ALAN HOVHANESS

On 5 October, 2008, pianist Martin Berkofsky, joined by pianist Ani Hovsepian and clarinetist Lawrence Sobol performed at the Armenian Cultural Foundation. The concert, honouring Alan Hovhaness in his home town of Arlington, Massachusetts, was a benefit, the artists playing without fee. All profits were donated to the fund to construct a memorial plaque in Arlington.

Robert Mirak, President of the Armenian Cultural Foundation, wrote to Martin Berkofsky:

"I have been searching some time to find the right words to describe how delighted and thrilled we were by your October 5 performance at the Armenian Cultural Foundation to benefit the Alan Hovhaness Commemorative Project.

We have certainly heard praises-and continue to do so-from those privileged to have been in the audience that special Sunday afternoon. You excited and made us happy by your wonderful renditions of Alan's works as well as those of Beethoven and Liszt. We also benefited from your thoughtful and interesting reminiscences of the great man. The music of Ani Hovsepian and the music and comments of Larry Sobol were added moments of pleasure. On behalf of all of us from the Armenian Cultural Foundation and the Alan Hovhaness Commemorative Project, thank you again.

Martin, it has been a great pleasure to have met you twice now, to be affiliated with someone of your artistic genius and your public spiritedness; and I hope that you will continue for many decades in your career. We are certainly in your debt."
