May 2005 – Agreement Reached for Hovhaness Research Centre
31st May, 2005 – Yerevan: Henrik Bakhchinyan, (right) Director of the State Museum of Arts and Literature, and Alexan Zakyan, (left) President of the Manana Public Benefit Organization, signed an Agreement on Joint Activity for the establishment of the Alan Hovhaness International Research Centre, to be built within the Museum, as well as an Alan Hovhaness Hall also within the Museum itself.
The coordinator of the Research Centre will be Alexan Zakyan and it will maintain a not-for-profit purpose of “spreading and teaching the cultural inheritance of Alan Hovhaness”. Roles and responsibilities have been drawn up with regard to funding, construction and interior design of the Research Centre, and establishment of relationships with other institutions.
The Research Centre will be the first stage in an ambitious project which aims for the eventual establishment of a Hovhaness Museum. Necessary materials, registrations and territory must be forthcoming before the Government of Armenia will confer the status of a distinct museum, and the Museum of Literature and Art will support this cause.
Before the Research Centre itself can be inaugurated, a permanent Alan Hovhaness Hall will be established within the present museum, to serve as a venue for concert presentations, educational and/or cultural meetings as well as displaying exhibits. The concert grand piano which belonged to the revered Armenian composer Komitas is in this hall and will be restored.
