ALAN HOVHANESS 95TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION, KHATCHATURIAN HALL, YEREVAN

On 24 November, 2006, the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra and State Academic Choir conducted by Ruben Asatrian and Ohannes Chekidjian; pianists Martin Berkofsky and Atakan Sari; Seda Odabashyan, soprano; Narine Ananikyan, mezzo soprano; Berj Karazyan, tenor; and Shi Shuan, bass, presented a memorable evening of works by Alan Hovhaness and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Three Hovhaness works received their Armenian premieres: Symphony No. 50, Mount St. Helens (1982;) Magnificat, (1958;) and Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra, (1954.) Beethoven's Choral Fantasy with Martin Berkofsky as piano soloist concluded this never-to-be-forgotten concert.

C. F. Peters publishers, whose president Henry Hinrichsen commissioned the Mount St. Helens Symphony in 1981, generously sponsored this Armenian premiere.

Messrs. Berkofsky and Sari, who had given the world premiere of the Two Piano Concerto in Moscow's Tchaikovaky Hall, appeared at this concert by invitation of the Armenian Embassy in Moscow.
